Old lock on the Schuykill Canal, Pennsylvania, built around 1835. This lock is opened once a month for demonstration purposes.
This photo was taken as part of a scavenger hunt sponsored by my camera club.

I like the two-toned color scheme - the rich emerald and the weathered gray - which play beautifully off one another. Our eye is pulled deeply into the composition, following the canal and waiting to burst forth through the lock gates.

Would love to see this. They have a small park up along 322 towards Lewistown where the old canal use to go along the Juniata river. I've yet to get up there to see it. Sounds like these canals took an extreme amount of labor to build.

@Marym: These canals were dug by hand--no power equipment--in the 1830s. Thanks for visiting my blog. Hope you get to the canal along the Juniata.
