Anna's White Orchid

Posted by
Anita (West Nottingham, Pennsylvania, United States) on 15 January 2010 in Plant & Nature.

SEE YESTERDAY'S POST FOR BETTER ANGLE OF THE FLOWER
Yesterday I had the pleasure of photographing an orchid grown by my friend Anna. The flower was perfect, without blemishes--what joy! Being able to move the plant allowed me to isolate the flower, something I am unable to do at Longwood Gardens. I used a black foam board as background, which I darkened in post processing. The light was low, hence the long exposure. (I don't know why the EXIF data is not showing up.)

This is beautiful photo of beautiful orchid. We also plant orchids with my wife but we don't have such beauties. It reminds me that our white phalaenopsis started to bloom yesterday :) The composition, light and colours, everything this is very well done. I find photographing orchids difficult, especially macro photos so I wonder if you took also some more detailed/macro photos or just this one.

@Tomas Turecek: Thanks. I took some macros. Will post them if they are OK. Haven't checked. I, too, find orchids quite challenging!

What a lovely orchid.. They are hard for me to photograph.. Great colors. I find my head tilting to the right alot when looking at this image.

@Mary: Do you think I should rotate it a bit to the left?

The light is what blows me away here -- it seems as if it's almost illuminated from the inside.

White flowers are difficult to photograph and special attention has to be paid to the exposure. You handled this problem very well! The white petals show great details of their texture. Making your photograph even more beautiful is the dark black background and the light.

Stunning! I always love white on black. It looks so elegant to my eye. If anything, I'd like the see the stem come in at slightly more of angle but it is beautiful, as is.
