Nodding Thistle (Carduus nutans)

Posted by
Anita (West Nottingham, Pennsylvania, United States) on 23 July 2008 in Plant & Nature.

THANK YOU to all for the numerous, positive comments on my last photo. :-)
Also called Musk Thistle. Non-native. Pennsylvania, USA, considers it a noxious weed. Grows in our meadow, but we cut them down before they go to seed so they won't spread. Too bad, as they are lovely!
Photo taken indoors, natural light, tripod, black felt background, macro lens.

A beautiful and colorful thistle. Certainly, it is weeds, but it can be beautiful for it. We have similar plants with us, too.

Gorgeous capture, Anita. I don't see any star rating. Am I missing something?

We have to be very careful with some invasive species. Out of their native habitat they may proliferate uncontrollably.

It's as if it's suspended in black space. Beautiful!

It may be a noxious weed, but it must be one of the more beautiful ones! I like how you show it on a velvety black background. Fine image today!

Beautiful shot! The background is just perfect - it helps to focus only on the main subject.

Great flower macros over the past few days, Anita, but I really like this one. We have purple thistle here, but they don't make these incredible tendrils like this one. Thanks for posting these!

@Eric Fry: Eric: First: Thanks for your supportive comments. Second: I didn't notice the white tendrils until I saw the photo on my monitor! Your thistles may hae them also!
