Bad Photo, Good Idea

Posted by Anita (West Nottingham, Pennsylvania, United States) on 13 December 2010 in Miscellaneous.

What to do with all those photographs? I have the ones I like best printed on 8.5 x 11 paper and put them on a long, white wall behind and above my desk. I can add and subtract as I please. Seeing this colorful mass of images makes me smile and reminds me of why I take photos. :-)

Yes, the remarkable Annie Leibovitz film is, "Life Through a Lens," and I have seen it twice so far. She has on the wall the photos that she is planning to choose from for her next book. Your wall is terrific. It sounds like you do not print your own, but have another source to do that. Am I correct? Great idea. :-)

@DULCIE: Thanks for the title of the film. You are right. I do not print my own. I think printing is an art in itself. A friend from the camera club I belong to does it for me. He does a beautiful job at reasonable prices. I'm very happy with the arrangement.

Julie Brown from Indianapolis, United States

Great idea, Anita. You can probably spend hours in there, looking at all of the images and remembering how you made them.

@Julie Brown: Seeing the images helps me decide which to select for framing and exhibiting.

Sue Henry from Nashville, United States

I use a similar concept -- a couple of gallery ledges that hold inexpensively framed pieces. I rotate images in and out of the frames and onto the ledges. I find it interesting to see which pieces I quickly tire of and which pieces "wear well."

Yes, we, too, have our personal favorites printed and displayed and they do take on a different significance to merely being on a screen, somehow. But, as you concentrate on a more narrow topic, your display has greater impact, I think.

Must be great to see all of your 'work' printed and up on a wall like this. Very inspiring!!!

Anita, this is a good idea! I love the lines of color stretching across your wall. I have something like this in my office. You can buy plastic strips that mount on the wall and you can slide your photo in without tape, tacks, etc. Teachers use this in classrooms to display student work. I cannot find a link right now for this product, but will keep poking around and send it to you when I run across it. But, my wall is only a fraction the length of yours! We live in a very lovely but small home!

@Barbara Lee: Glad you like the idea and that you have something similar in your office. This wall is part of my study/studio I'd not heard of the plastic strips you mention. My prints are held up with a putty like substance called Elmer's Tack, also used by teachers. I can switch prints easily.
