Mary & Anita

Posted by Anita (West Nottingham, United States) on 30 March 2009 in People & Portrait.

We thought we would end our series of winter photo challenges with a photo of us! We took this picture at Longwood Gardens. See Mary's blog for her version.

We also decided to share what this winter project has meant to each of us.
We came up with the idea of selecting a subject which we would then photograph separately and post on a certain day to help keep us motivated during the blah winter months. It worked! Every two weeks we had to take photos and post them. There is no substitute for practice in becoming a better photographer.

I learned that I can set challenges for myself and use them as growth opportunities; that working on a challenge with a friend is more fun than working on it alone as we encouraged each other and I was always curious as to how Mary would execute the assignment; that I can photograph subjects I am not naturally drawn to; that there are more subjects than flowers to photograph.

The project allowed me to experiment with new techniques, such as textures and putting several photos together.

I do not have a favorite subject in the series. As I look at all seven, I am reminded of how different the are.

The most fun was taking the photos of ourselves. Mary set up the scene and set her camera's timer. She is fun to work with--as you can see by her big smile. The self-portrait and scarves were her idea. She is also the person who came up with the list of subjects to photograph. I can take credit for the initial idea of a photo series.

*****THANK YOU FOR VISITING ANITA'S PHOTOBLOG!*****

I welcome your honest critique, especially if they will improve my photography.

If I have made a mistake in a flower identification, please let me know!

A few words about the EXIF data, beginning in April when I began using Nikon D300 and the Sigma 105mm macro: My new camera and macro lens record the relative or effective f stop, not the one seen on the lens. For an explanation of this, go to the next to the last question at this site.

Your project was a TOTAL SUCCESS! I think this photo, featuring you and Mary, gives us insight as to part of the reason the project was so successful; friendship, fun, freedom. And, isn't it wonderful that you have explored some new avenues in your photography.

What a fantastic idea to have assignments to photograph & post.

An excellent concluding photo in composition and execution, but primarily because it so thoroughly conveys the joy you two felt in the project and feel in one another.

A savored close to this part of your Project. I agree that setting little goals can achieve more than the sum of the parts and can shift our artistic perspective in the long term. The scarves are a brilliant idea here !
