Yellow Flower

Posted by Anita (West Nottingham, United States) on 21 January 2009 in Plant & Nature.

This is one of my attempts to get a flower in focus and have a colorful out-of-focus background. The flower is not as in focus as I would like, but I do like the background.

Taken at Longwood Gardens Conservatory on Saturday. Tripod, natural light and macro lens. Basic adjustments in PS7.

The image that was posted early Wednesday morning didn't look right, so I reposted it at 7:30 am.

*****THANK YOU FOR VISITING ANITA'S PHOTOBLOG!*****

I welcome your honest critique, especially if they will improve my photography.

If I have made a mistake in a flower identification, please let me know!

A few words about the EXIF data, beginning in April when I began using Nikon D300 and the Sigma 105mm macro: My new camera and macro lens record the relative or effective f stop, not the one seen on the lens. For an explanation of this, go to the next to the last question at this site.

chakrapani from Hyderabad, India

that is a good Depth ! flawless bokeh too ! .. however if i were you, i would crop or get the flower in the middle or left one/thirds of the frame.. getting the flower here at a lil bottom makes me feel a lil too empty on the top 60% of the pic ! hey but thats me !

@chakrapani: I appreciate your comments. :-) See cover image of his book "Fina Art Flower Photography" here for source of my idea.

Excellent, Anita. I LOVE all the negative space in this image. You're becoming quite the Georgia O'Keefe with a camera. I really like this. The only thing I would change would be to crop out about 2/3'rds of the stem to move the flower to the extreme bottom of the frame, and then center it more. But that's just a personal preference. This is quite lovely. Well done.

@Russ Devan: Thanks, Russ! I have long been a Georgia O'Keefe fan. This image was inspired by Tony Sweet. See See cover image of his book "Fina Art Flower Photography" here
