Taken at Longwood Gardens Conservatory a week ago.
I wish the centers were sharper.

I welcome your honest critique, especially if they will improve my photography.

If I have made a mistake in a flower identification, please let me know!

A few words about the EXIF data, beginning in April when I began using Nikon D300 and the Sigma 105mm macro: My new camera and macro lens record the relative or effective f stop, not the one seen on the lens. For an explanation of this, go to the next to the last question at this site.

Thanks! I'm sorry you have been having grey days. We've had about 4 sunny days in a row, and I'm so happy!

I noticed your comment about wishing the centers were a little sharper. I like the image just as it is. There is a graceful softness about the image that evokes a peaceful, soothing mood.

António Pires from Lisbon, Portugal

Well composed. You surely used a tripod.

4 Jan 2009 11:43am

@António Pires: Thanks for the comment! Yes, I did use a tripod. When I started out with digital photography, I hated using tripods. Now, I almost never take a picture without one!

I agree with Sue that this image of such gentle flowers benefits from the softness. A fine addition to your Longwood portfolio.

So, it's a great composition (I also love the "7"); you've succeeded in conveying an overall softness; I enjoy the three dimensional feel, the sense of my eye being drawn into the depths behind; the petals are sharp and distinct; it's a striking photo. Is it possible to achieve all that and also get the effect you want with the centers? Perhaps the tech folk out there can tell us. Or maybe that just wasn't to be for this opportunity. Until you find it, this one works very nicely for me.
