Clover in Clear Bottle

Posted by Anita (West Nottingham, United States) on 2 October 2008 in Plant & Nature.

I found a few clover flowers in the meadow to create this arrangement in a clear bottle. Again, I overexposed for a high-key effect.
Which do you prefer--amber or clear bottle?
I'm not yet sure myself.

I welcome your honest critique, especially if they will improve my photography.

If I have made a mistake in a flower identification, please let me know!

A few words about the EXIF data, beginning in April when I began using Nikon D300 and the Sigma 105mm macro: My new camera and macro lens record the relative or effective f stop, not the one seen on the lens. For an explanation of this, go to the next to the last question at this site.

Another fantastic photo anita I love this effect. However I think a prefer the orange bottle For me the clear bottle gives not enough contrast. I think you could experiment with lots of different coloured bottles maybe pink and green. You are certainly very talented at flower photography

@jamesy: Your idea of trying different colored bottles is a good one. Thank you for offering it, and for commenting on these two images. :-)

Terri from Portland, United States

I like the clear bottle - the starkness and contrast are fabulous.

@Terri: Thank you, Terri.

António Pires from Lisbon, Portugal

This one is lovely. The bottle is almost unnoticed, just the elegant plant against the white bg. Even the subtle contour of the bottle is nice. How well you arranged the plant to create a well balanced composition.

@António Pires: Thank you for your detailed comment. I appreciate the feedback so much! I enjoy arranging flowers. :-)

Betty from New Jersey, United States

After seeing the clear bottle, I think I prefer the amber bottle. I really like the flower arrangement!

Such a nice photo... Lovely pinks too! Although I think the white background damages the composition a little?

2 Oct 2008 10:32am

@Koushiro~光子郎: I think I know what you mean about the white background. I'm experimenting with something like high-key images--overexposed on a light background. I probably won't know how much I actually like it until I see some prints of these images. Thanks for contributing your thoughts! I really appreciate it.

I like the arrangement of the clover. My Eye goes all over the photo. The clear bottle works very well. Nice Job! Its great to experiment!

Yes! Yes! Yes! Clear bottle for me! Very, very artistic; much like a line drawing.

David Ross from Bryn Mawr, PA, United States

Why choose? To me these photos would look great next to each other in an exhibit. I'm enjoying the high-key effect on the white background

@David Ross: Thank you, David!

ABW from Colorado, United States

The amber bottle gives greater contrast which has a nice effect. The clear bottle adds a bit of simplicity which also has a nice effect. I love both of them - I can't choose!

@ABW: Thanks for telling me what you like about each. This feedback is really helpful to me. :-)

Oh! Yes! definitely the clear bottle. Such a delicate image, and very sharp.

Ronnie 2¢ from London, United Kingdom

Oh, this reminds me of those Victorian watercolor botanic studies . . this is a lovely presentation and I much prefer the clear bottle which does not fight the flowers.

2 Oct 2008 7:43pm

@Ronnie 2¢: Thanks. Yes, the clear bottle blends right in. I hope to work more with this type of image. I wasn't completely happy with the flower arrangement.

Ron from Saint Louis, United States

Beautiful Anita ... they're both great work ... I think I like the flowers better in yesterday's image - a bit sharper.

@Ron: Thanks for your comments. It is really helpful to get specific feedback like this!

Marcie from United States

Lovely still life. The white background is especially wonderful.

@Marcie: Thank you, Marcie.

GJC from Kyoto, Japan

I think both are good. In the second one the flowers tend to dominate more as abstract forms while in yesterday's the bottle provides a "root" for those stems. Both are fine and work well.

@GJC: Thank you for considering both and sharing your thoughts. :-)

Laurie from New Jersey, United States

Sweet! I like this very much.
