Lilacs

Posted by Anita (West Nottingham, United States) on 2 May 2008 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

I love Lilacs. Their season is short, but while it lasts, I have several bouquets of lilacs in the house to enjoy their beauty and lovely scent.

Taken indoors with natural light from east facing window.

Constructive critique welcome.

I welcome your honest critique, especially if they will improve my photography.

If I have made a mistake in a flower identification, please let me know!

A few words about the EXIF data, beginning in April when I began using Nikon D300 and the Sigma 105mm macro: My new camera and macro lens record the relative or effective f stop, not the one seen on the lens. For an explanation of this, go to the next to the last question at this site.

Stunning, Anita ... yours are so much deeper in color than mine (I'll be posting a shot of mine [outdoors] in a day or two ... the water droplets just add to the natural beauty of these gems!

@Ron: Ron: Thanks! I probably made the color deeper than it really is in PS. I look forward to seeing yours.

Kerri from Blacksburg, United States

Very pretty Anita! Love those "drops" you captured!

2 May 2008 10:53am

@Kerri: Thanks so much. Maybe you know that those 'drops" were sprayed on by me. :-)

Elspeth from St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago

Something you are able to capture in each of your flower photos feels very alive. In this one, the most prominent flower looks like it's standing up - like a child in a classroom raising his/her hand to say something.

@Elspeth: Why thank you, Elspeth! I really like the image you describe.

Betty from New Jersey, United States

Another beautiful shot, Anita. Wonderful light...

2 May 2008 12:07pm

@Betty: Thanks, Betty. Light from a window is soft and diffuse. I used foam boards below and sides to reflect some of the light back onto the flowers.

Marcie from United States

Simlply beautiful! Love the color..the drops of rain or dew that you've captured.
There truly is something dreamy about it.

2 May 2008 12:30pm

@Marcie: Thank you, Marcie! I'm so glad you like it.

GJC from Kyoto, Japan

[Applause!] This is stunning. The colors and the water -- just marvelous. Really one of your best.

@GJC: Thank you so much for the applause. I am bowing to you.

An excellent macro, Anita... catch some butterflies on these too if you can.

2 May 2008 4:33pm

@Earnest: Thanks! I don't remember seeing butterflies on my Lilacs. That is strange, now that I think of it.

Gorgeous color and tones. Like the repeating pattern of flowers here. Great selective focus and outstanding composition.

Mark from Sterling Heights, United States

Quite nice Anita, I like the contrasty edges of the petals. I have these in my yard, yet embarrassingly haven't photographed them. Not sure why - but your image inspires me to take a closer look.

3 May 2008 4:03am

@Mark: Thanks, Mark. Often the flowers are rather high on the bush, and a bit difficult to photograph. I brought mine indoors.

Mirco from Switzerland
