Shad tree - Amelanchier

Posted by Anita (West Nottingham, United States) on 29 April 2008 in Plant & Nature.

This otherwise undistinguished tree produces delicate small flowers in April, sprinkling the woods with dots of white.
Taken at Ferncliff Wildflower Preserve, Lancaster Couonty, Pennsylvania, USA.

Constructive critique welcome.

I welcome your honest critique, especially if they will improve my photography.

If I have made a mistake in a flower identification, please let me know!

A few words about the EXIF data, beginning in April when I began using Nikon D300 and the Sigma 105mm macro: My new camera and macro lens record the relative or effective f stop, not the one seen on the lens. For an explanation of this, go to the next to the last question at this site.

Terrific as usual. Particularly striking is the stamen visible through the petals of the left-hand flower. I do find that green leaf in the immediate foreground a little distracting. What do you think? Done with your usual careful attention to clarity and light.

@GJC: Thanks. I completely agree about that leaf being distracting. It is actually in the foreground. I almost didn't post this photo because of it. Thank for mentioning it as it confirms my sense. :-)

Wonderful composition, didn't notice the leaf at first... otherwise, the flower is absolutely beautiful!

Beautiful details, colors, and lighting. I also think the green leaf on the left is a little distracting - it pulls the attention away from the flower in focus.....

@Chris: I completely agree.

I enjoy the story that this tree's name reflects the observation that it blooms when the shad (like salmon) swim up our rivers to reproduce. My mother savored shad roe (a favored delicacy this time of year along the Delaware).
