Lancaster County Farm

Posted by Anita (West Nottingham, United States) on 7 March 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Although Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA, has lots of Amish farms, this is not one of them. This is what the Amish call an "English" farm, that is, a non-Amish farm. I was struck by how beautifully maintained it is. Located about 4 miles from my house.

A few words about the EXIF data, beginning in April when I began using Nikon D300 and the Sigma 105mm macro: My new camera and macro lens record the relative or effective f stop, not the one seen on the lens. For an explanation of this, go to the next to the last question at this site.

How beautiful and peaceful, though of course it's a lot of hard work out there. But it's a lovely scene.

Wonderful peaceful picture - almost looks like it could be the scene for a painting. I don't see any power lines - are you sure it is "english"?

@Chris: Good point! I saw a pickup in the drive both times I went there, so made the assumption. I will have to go back and find out!

It's a beautiful (and quite substantial!) farm and a great shot! I love the strong contrasts between all the white and the brown earth. Earlier today I was looking at Kathleen Connally's "A Walk Through Durham Township" photoblog; when your image opened just now I immediately thought it looks like a scene that she would have captured.

I may be a city boy, but I love scenes like this.

Beautiful picture, Anna. I always want to head down to Lancaster and take some photos of the country there. You captured the atmosphere in Lancaster perfectly with this shot. You've inspired me to get down there this year for sure. Great shot.

Ron from St. Louis compares this to photos by Kathleen Connally. This helped me click on what I admire so much about this photo. Like here excellent work, you've figured out how to set up all the ingredients in the shot in a harmonious whole, in a way that best tells the story. It's an essay!

Hi Anita - I hope you will share tihs with your neighbor with an appreciation for his loving care. I also hope they will look at preserving our vanishing farms in this area.
