Chinese Hibiscus

Posted by Anita (West Nottingham, United States) on 17 January 2008 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

To combat the winter blues and nurture my spirit, I went to the conservatory at Longwood Gardens (a 35 minute drive from my house) where I spent several blissful hours photographing flowers.
This gorgeous hibiscus is callend 'The Pearl.' I used a 100mm macro lens.

*****THANK YOU FOR VISITING ANITA'S PHOTOBLOG!*****

I welcome your honest critique, especially if they will improve my photography.

If I have made a mistake in a flower identification, please let me know!

A few words about the EXIF data, beginning in April when I began using Nikon D300 and the Sigma 105mm macro: My new camera and macro lens record the relative or effective f stop, not the one seen on the lens. For an explanation of this, go to the next to the last question at this site.

Raye Michele from Halifax, Canada

@Raye Michele: Thank you. I am working on getting my photos to be sharper.

Laurie from New Jersey, United States

It's absolutely beautiful! I've never been to Longwood Gardens. My parents would go there with some regularity. I've been meaning to get there. Perhaps this winter.

@Laurie: Tripods are allowed in the mornings, and, if not crowded, into the afternoons. It is nice to see flowers in the midst of winter.

GJC from Kyoto, Japan

Wonderful image. I particularly like the framing here because it emphasizes the swirling pattern on the petals. Very, very nice.

@GJC: Thank you!

Beautiful -- the water droplets add so much!

18 Jan 2008 3:28am

@Mackenzie: Thank you. These plants had just been misted or watered, so I was lucky with my timing.

Chris from South Jersey, United States

Wonderful colors and composition. The water droplets really make the image and I am sure I would not have considered them....
Longwood is great, although I have not been since I got my new "toy" to shoot with. Especially nice this time of year when you can shoot the conservatory indoors and stay warm. Winterthur is nice also, but the gardens are all outside and better suited to warmer weather.

18 Jan 2008 9:32pm

@Chris: Many thanks. I didn't think of the water droplets. I found them and thought they would add to the photo.

Aayawa from Edinburgh, United Kingdom
