Amish Laundry on Porch

Posted by Anita (West Nottingham, United States) on 4 January 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

The Amish near us in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA, do not use clothes dryers. This is Fenney's laundry drying on her porch. She had more clothes on a long line to the side of the house. Although below freezing at the time of this photo, the temperatures are expected to rise to 35 farenheight.
Barely visible in the table is a loaf of homemade bread. It is delicious. I took this photo when I stopped by this morning to buy 8 loaves.

A few words about the EXIF data, beginning in April when I began using Nikon D300 and the Sigma 105mm macro: My new camera and macro lens record the relative or effective f stop, not the one seen on the lens. For an explanation of this, go to the next to the last question at this site.

Hi, Anita. When I worked in Pennsylvania long ago for a short while I remember stopping to get some supplies in an Amish shop. What do I remember most -- the smell of fresh bread cooking!

@Earnest: Fresh baked bread has a special smell.

Yes, their fresh bread along with jams, jellies, and during harvest season fresh vegetables are beyond wonderful! ........ I love this shot and was always fascinated by their lines of laundry!

Me too. It is a challenge to photograph Amish life, at least it is for me. The Amish are not supposed to pose for photos, but, one of my neighbors asked for copies of photos I took of his farm, and says his wife keeps a photo album.

I love visiting Lancaster, but I haven't taken any pictures there for a while. How great that you have Amish neighbors that you can buy fresh bread from, and that you can take pictures of their clothes!

Great color and lighting in the picture, and you cropped it just right.

@Chris: Thank you. I did have to crop the original photo. I was pleased Feeney gave me permission to take a photo.
